on my dodge ram 1500 4x4 2002 when i switch to 4 wheel drive a whining noise up front occurs what could it be

I'm guessing it makes the whining noise when moving? The actuator that engages the four wheel is not moving coupling completely. Either a bad vacuum diaphragm or something with the rod or coupling on the axle itself.
