I just bought a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.9 liter V 8. The speedo and tach don't work so I'm not sure how many miles are on it. Last shown is 148K.
I just bought a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.9 liter V 8. The speedo
and tach don't work so I'm not sure how many miles are on it. Last shown is
148K. It runs rough when started but then smooths out (mostly) when
warmed up. It still feels shakey, hesitant and weak however like it's only
running on 7 cylinders. The plugs are all good and are a frosty white color
(too lean?), the wires, cap and rotor are new. It's showing codes P0500
Vehicle Speed Sensor Fault as well as P1740 TCM Internal Malfunction.
I've poured a can of Sea Foam in a fresh tank and have used up about half
the tank but so far no improvement. I'd really like to get this truck running
100%. Any advice???
The VSS can cause the speedo not to work and give an improper signal to TCM causing it to malfunction. So the first thing to do is to replace the VSS and check the wiring from it make sure it isn't burnt or shredded by rodents, then see if the speedometer works, if it does then clear the computer system and run a relearn cycle and watch for the check engine light to return, if it don't then you can go onto the tach. That is usually the head but it can also be wiring or connection at the cluster. HTH
Thanks for your ideas. Ill check / replace the VSS tomorrow and check out the wiring. The tach actually works. The ABS light is also on so looking into that. It could all be related. What do you think about the P1740 TCM Internal Malfunction code?
Replace the VSS first as it tells the computer the speed and the computer tell the TCM, if there is no signal to the computer to send the computer subs in a value so it will drive but the TCM can misread this value and set a code as an internal error. ABS light can be many things, wheel speed sensors, rabs valves, the pump, you will need the codes for this system also.
Thank you again!
