If you have not already done so, first thing to do is check your transmission fluid level. The '99 Ram 1500 4WD with the 5.2 Magnum has the A518/46RH-RE 4 speed automatic. I read up on that, and there have been lots of owners with transmission Valve Body solenoid problems, and the BCM aka Body Control Module.

After more reading, lots of folks have had to change out the Valve Body. http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0e9885 ....offers owners reviews, problems and solutions ...http://www.ramforum.com/f70/transmission_problem-20277/ also does. And more information, excerpts from: http://www.ehow.com/list_7251030_dodge-ram-1500-transmission-problems.html ....The most common transmission problem with Dodge Ram 1500 trucks manufactured prior to 2000 is transmission failure. The 1999 models seem to experience this issue more than cars manufactured in other years and owners who registered such complaints occasionally noted that such problems occurred even after a low-stress transmission life. Even when transmissions were rebuilt, drivers continued to experience such issues. Reversing problems have been reported to include complete failure of reversing mechanisms as well as unusual noises heard while reversing. A significant complaint from truck owners has been fluctuating rpm and random gear shifts. The most common solution found by owners has been to replace the truck's TPS sensor ~~~~. TPS is Throttle Position Sensor

The problem with reverse is that the second gear clutch servo, That's the one that operates reverse. It has a defect in the grove that holds the piston seal. when it fails(the seal) you do not have enough fluid pressure to engage the clutch at low rpm at a higher rpm it does at first that is why second gear works but it will soon fail. This information about the grove being a factory defect was included with my parts list I got with my rebuild kit. I know about this years ago but they never posted it because there was not a modified seal. Now that their is they say (Their might be a factory defect) I got a laugh out of that I guess dodge did not give them a full disclosure.
