1998 Dodge 1500 RAM 5.7 motor cuts off.... and then turns itself back on :/

Asked by Kim Dec 09, 2013 at 06:58 PM about the 1999 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck keeps turning the motor off, not the power, just the motor. Still have all the power for gauges, lights, etc... just the motor goes dead. It is made even creepier that in 5-10 seconds it turns itself back on, as in I did not touch anything other than the steering wheel to stay on the road and it just magically comes back to life as if nothing ever happened. It has been doing this for several months now, but of course will not do it with the mechanic, and it is actually VERy sporadic. I thought it was just when towing the horse trailer, but it has done it twice now without the trailer. Making it worse is now the last time, it went totally dead (power and all) until I used the key to restart it after coming to a complete stop :( Help!

I believe it's the secondary ignition at fault here....look for either a cracked distributor cap or motor mounts that cause the engine to move about shortin' against the hood, control arm...anywhere~ I'd turn off the lights and look for sparks...a new set of silicone wires may put you on the right track, at the very least....the coil wire? that close to the hood?

I will tell the mechanic... they are very good but at a loss :( Thanks!

would the motor mounts also make an odd vibration in the front end?

this would have to be a standard gearbox, void the spooky incounter. the ASD is in play here, but why?

ignition/starter relay...and Kimi we do the best we can without havin' the car right there~ http://www.ebay.com/itm/STARTER-RELAY-DODGE-RAM1500-DODGE- RAM-2500-DODGE-RAM-3500-DODGE-STRATUS-/231084705297
