1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Start and Transmission
Hey guys, I have a couple issues today,
I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with the magnum 5.2l and 46re
The first issue is starting it. When I try and start it cold it will start right up,
then die immediately. I have to press on the gas to keep it going and warm
it up. Then I have to let off, hit the brake and go... otherwise it will die
again. Once it warms up, it will start right up, sometimes dying at a stop
sign or something.
The other issue is the transmission, when it's cold, it shifts rough and
erratically, like it has low fluid. When you come to a complete stop it will
often disengage from drive, then catch hard. To avoid these hard shifts I
put it in ppark then drive to re-engage the gear. After it warms up, it no
longer shifts hard and doesn't disengage. I have checked the fluid time
and again, it's clean, pink, and feels smooth between my fingers as it
should. I purchased a new filter and am going to drain the fluid and refill it,
but was wondering if anyone else has had these issues.
A brief history of the truck to give you an idea... My Dad and I have been
fixing this up since May as it is my first truck. He said I would pay for
everything to fix it up and in December it would go under my name so I
would pay for insurance and all the fuel. Until then he is using it to go back
and forth to work as we are a two car family. What I mean by this is he
drives it to and from work every day, roughly 20 miles a day. I don't know if
it uis bad to be driving it all the time but we don't have a choice and i feel as
though the problem is only getting worse.
Any insight or help is appreciated... Thanks!
Might be one of your transmission solenoids has failed or the torque convertor is the issue.
