What can I do to get better mileage performance in a 1999 Dodge 1500 Ram? Also, the dash is cracked in several places, any recommendations on how to fix it?
Someone suggested putting a type of fuel booster of some type and then changing the
spark plugs. I would like to get better mileage performance. Should I be driving in 4L or
2L? I have been driving it in 4L and the 4wheel drive light is on.
Why are you driving it in 4X4 low range? No wonder your mileage is terrible, 4X4 low is ment for low speed, either off road, snow, slick road nothing over 40 MPH tops, 2WD just disengages the front axle, still under low speed rule, 4X4 High is for lighter snow or heavy rain and high water on the roadway, higher speeds are attainable but not advisable, 2WD High is for everyday driving on the road or well established trails when 4 wheel drive is not necessary. Hope this helps ahead some light on mileage.
Fuel booster is a waste of money. Putting in the gas tank an occasional bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner is beneficial. The biggest killer of fuel mileage is a poorly tuned engine and under- inflated tires. Do a full tune up if necessary (spark plugs, belt(s), filters, transmission fluid, differential lubricants, transfer case fluid, etc.). You should be driving around in 2H unless the road conditions warrant 4 wheel drive. Driving around on dry road surfaces in 4 wheel drive consumes extra fuel and wears things out, including tires.
Thanks. This is very helpful. My husband passed and i'm just getting to know these things. The 2H seems to drive ok around town as well.
