Why wont the overdrive engage?

Got a 1999 4x4 dodge 1500 extended cab, the
button for overdrive will not turn off the "o/d off"
light, nor will it shift the transmission into
overdrive. What do I do?

When the O/D light stay on, that means there is a transmission fault. You can actually pull the transmission codes. I would have a mechanic or transmission shop diagnose it, but for your age truck and not shifting into Overdrive, you are looking at a rebuild.
