When you turn off over drive, your car doesnt use its final gear that means of your car has 5 speed its only using 4 speed.over drive is very important for better fuel efficiency.

When the tranny shifts into overdrive it upshifts to the highest gear and the torque converter clutch locks in. The most common problem is usually the torque converter clutch solenoid. They become sticky with age and use. Sometimes they'll engage and sometimes they won't. Sometimes they'll get stuck on and cause stalling as soon as you shift out of park. Sometimes they'll stick off causing you to lose overdrive. My guess here is that the computer is disabling overdrive because the torque converter clutch is not engaging because of a bad solenoid. There's a temperature sensor, usually screwed into one of the cooling lines. Perhaps it's lost it's calibration. HTH. -Jim

Usually the O/D button is on the end of the shifter stalk. HTH. -Jim

I'm having the same problem with my 01' Dodge Ram. Tran Temp light comes on and O/D turns off while driving maybe, 10-20miles . It can't be turned on with button. After it sits all night, the O/D comes back on fine. All solenoids and speed sensor have been changed. Still does it. Any ideas?
