transmission jumping in & out of overdrive

Between 45-50 MPH transmission up shifts down shifts erratically when slight accelerator movement such as slight grade.

That is the speed the overdrive engages, lock out the overdrive if you can if you traveling at that speed for an extended period of time. It's annoying, like you noticed, and puts wear and tear on the transmission. But if it erratic like you said and or more pronounced, the overdrive band could be burnt. That means your looking at tearing into the trans to replace. So essentially a rebuild.
