1997 dodge 1500 4x4 problems plz help

I was driving and then the 4wd light came on
wasn't in 4wd then the engine light and gen light
and trans temp light came on all at the same time
and the engine is back firing and is spitting and
spuddering and then dies I pulled over and then
shut it off and it wouldn't start for about five
minutes and when I went to start it I had to hold
the gas down then it would stay running until I put
it in gear then the lights would all come on and it
would back fire badly and got pulled home was
running in neutral then when the truck was rolling
in neutral the truck died and wouldn't start  can
anyone help me

First thing is to check the computer for codes, if it has codes then fix those first before moving on, I suspect there maybe a wiring problem in the engines control systems based on what you said about the lights all turning on at the same time, possibly a ground.

Check for clogged catalytic converter

No codes and it's running straight pipe no cats on it

I still think it is a wiring problem.

Well I have to go get the truck yet so I let it sit all night see If that would change things

I keep getting told by everyone else it's the computer

You do have a muffler on it right ? If so that can get clogged also.

A glass pack it runs fine in park it just back fires when it's in gear and it back fires and all that shit

Figured it out it was a vacuum line going to transfer case
