I have a 97 Dodge Ram with a 318 engine. The truck sat for a while, and when I started driving it, the transmission began to slip within 6 weeks. It will still pull in reverse, but not in drive gears.
Replacing the filter and screen wont fix the problem. Have you checked the fluid level after bringing the vehicle up to operating temperature? You may just be low on fluid, if not you have have a forward piston problem
fluid level was good. How hard is the "forward piston problem" to fix.
That requires a tears down of the transmission, but I may have jumped the gun. I've been thinking about this since I posted my answer. - any chance there are any codes present? have you scanned it at all?
have not scanned it. It is where it has been sitting for a while now. I had been told that it might do good to flush it and change fluid and filter. It is a nice truck. Strong engine, 2 wd. All electric windows and seats . Still has the R12 compressor, and it was working when I parked it.
