96 ram 4x4 hard to shift into 4H
thats because you have to be stopped with these trucks or going under 10mph the Tcase is not a fully synchronized unit on the older rams. i dont know how your ending up in neutral though thats after 4H. do you get any grinding?
No grinding. Im stoped in N, and try to put inrd to 4 h but it is very ha rd to find it. If I go to far down, it ends up between H and L.
between H and L on the transfer case is neutral for the transfer case. stop in drive and see if you can find 4H it should pop right in regardless though

t case flush with fresh fluid if that dont break er loose replace or rebuild t case if u havent ever done your t case fluid it should be changed befor you mess around with it to much throw some limited slip in with your fluid
A. you dont add limited slip additive into a transfercase because it creates heat and friction B. the service interval for these trucks pretty much says dont fix it if it aint broken. and C. the fluid is just motor oil 5w30 or 10w30...... Any who i had a 96 1500 and it basically just popped into 4H with no problems when i was in drive. you only need to have your shifter in neutral if you wanna go into 4L
okay yeah sounds like to have a good idea and you know what you're talking about I will try to put it in gear tomorrow when I have the truck in drive I will respond tomorrow afternoon if it works I think you have it figured out

if your a journeyman in any thing id be surprised. you look like your about 15 in your picture. any who. the transfercase in this truck does not need a limited slip additive, no truck transfercase i know of does. your recommended fluid is Mopar ATF+4 5w30 or 10w30 motor oil. if you had broken parts it would grind or make some kind of terrible noise. i owned a 96 1500 from the time i was about 12 till the time i was 18 and saved enough for my 05 3500 cummins
I will check the vacuum lines and linkage my mechanic has been in business for 45 years I am just trying to cant a few points from you guys also. I still think it is in the linkage. It is always hard to get in 4h went its cold out.
Keep in mind Vacuum is only used by the front axle 4wd vacuum actuator. vacuum doesnt affect the transfercase. either your linkage is gummed up, or you have a mode fork going bad. hows the engagement into 4Low
The same. Its like Im missing the spot that you have to hit gor it to slid in. but it dose work. I had problems last winter also.
