Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L 2WD  WE NEED HELP!!!!! Ok
so for starters my husband is definitely mechanically
inclined Its actually what he does for a living
basically....But we have hit a dead  end with this issue
!!!!(My husband is a head motor breaker for a company
called LKQ) but not even he can figure out what is going
on with his truck, which is kinda shocking but thats why
im here asking for some help....fingers crossed Someone
can give us some advice!! Because hes about to go &
spend a HUGE amount of money  jus to try and trouble
shoot till he fixes his baby AKA his truck......also keep in
mind he THINKS its the FUEL PUMP....but i dont for some
reason ??i jus have a gut feeling it's something else way
more simple !!!  (But i know he ❤️'s this dang truck
more then me  cause he will spend WHATEVER he has
to do to fix it.....shit i ask for $5 and he acts like im
breaking the BANK lols !) But let me stop ✋ with my
pitty party and jump into this nightmare off a problem....So
my husband took his lunch break and went to get food
and all sudden his truck wouldnt start....so he got a jump
BOOM  It started right up so he drove back it back to
work...truck sounded and ran fine he says after he got the
jump so he figured he left the dome light on or something
so after work he goes to start the truck back up & the
truck would start up but then die out as soon as he gave it
gas ⛽️ well we tow it home  and he looks at a few
things & eventually he ends up hooking his scanner up to
it  no codes (which he says is normal with these trucks
i guess ??) so then he calls me out and hooks my car up
to his truck to jump it and has me turn the key and truck
sounded as if it was going to start but nothing so now he
checks battery and says thats not the issue...so he
decided to hit the gas tank multiple times as im turning
the key and we still had jumper cables on my car hooked
up to the truck so keep that in mind ( OK  SO THIS IS
WHERE WE ARE LOST)he hits the gas tank and i turn the
key and it started right up but i did have to pump the gas
peddle a bit to help it start BUT it would idle for a minute
then the moment i Push on gas and rev the RPM'S up or
actually even without me reving it up when we jus hit the
tank and turn key it would start to idle then BOOM it will
eventually die back out even while still being jumped from
my car... we need some help any suggestions we will be
so appreciative of them..!!!!  before we have to go out and
SPEND'S our daughters college fund (not really...well
maybe shit i wouldn't put it past him with it being his truck
cause it so dang precious to him ) We would love to
hear  any suggestions or anybody with this previous
problem input PLEASE!!!
Thank you

From what you've stated I believe that he's on the right track. Tell him to test the fuel pressure, that is the best way to find out if it has enough to pressure to keep the engine running. This does sound like a fuel delivery problem and as the filter is also part of the fuel pump assembly he will be fixing two potential problems at once if the pump indeed tests bad, aftermarket now makes this assembly so it same some money if he goes that route.
