My '94 Ram 1500 4WD gas engine truck runs fine until I engage the 4WD,
Asked by Snaketony1 Jan 04, 2014 at 10:41 PM about the 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 2 Dr ST 4WD Standard Cab LB
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Then in 4WD the engine shuts down after a short time and I can't get a restart until
stopped, shift lever in Park, shift back to 2WD, key off for a short time, key on, then a
restart in 2WD. Works OK until 4WD is engaged, then the process starts over again..
Any ideas what causes this?

Sounds like the linkage to the 4x4 is catching the wiring harness underneath.

Fixed it.. Found that the wire loom connected to the 4WD engagement solenoid had been rubbing against the drive shaft and wore through the wire cover. Apparently, the spinning of the drive shaft caused a magnetic field that shorted out the wiring causing the engine to stop. Wiring re-insulated, tied up and away where it had been pulled loose (from ice build up?), and no further problems. Loose wiring harness could also have been caused by the installation of the warranty replacement of the faulty factory transmission in the truck at 9000 miles.

My 94 dodge ram 1500, 5.2L, runs okay but began using lot of fuel. Had trouble codes 37, 32, and 51. Cleaned throttle body and checked for vaccum leaks or bad hoses. Code 32 gone away. Cleared code 51 which according to Haynes manual is not supposed to make the check engine light come on. Their is no code 37 in the Haynes manual for a gasoline engine on the 94 Ram. Their is for diesel engine. What is it, where is it at and how do I correct the problem. 51 I know is the O2 sensor. Truck runs great, shifts fine , but is still using more fuel than normal. Been reading about code 37 and transmissions, don't think my problem is there. Any help ? 3 answers
Cannot get the Code 37 to clear, can disconnect the battery and the code 51 clears, The code 32 has not come back but 51 comes back. 37 does not go away. Engine light will not come on after starting...
