What can cause overheating after I installed a new thermostat

The car started to overheat and lost acceleration so I
pulled over and now it won't start back up could it be the
heater coil or a head gasket

do a compression test , is there goop under the oil fill cap ?

Thermostat installed upside down? Air in the cooling system?

What engine do you have? Did you bleed the cooling system? You need to do that. Hope that helps! Jim
