never goes out

there are quite a few reasons why this is going to happen...the oxygen sensor has to be telling the computer just how much oxygen is in the combustion...very touchy with the electricals on that one...a catalytic converter has several oxygen sensors on it....would suspect the engine needs a tune-up at which point the problem should go away~

A flashing service engine soon light is warning you that the engine is misfiring and damaging the catalytic converter. Since it's flashing going up hill it sounds like misfiring under load. Most likely you need a tune up. Ignition systems will frequently break down under load but can function normally the rest of the time. If you have the V6 replace the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and distributor rotor. You should be getting tune ups every 30 months or 30,000 miles whichever comes first with this engine. If you have the 4 cylinder engine, replace the spark plugs and spark plug wires. Test the coil packs for proper operation. If one is weak/bad replace both. If one is failing the other is soon to follow. With this engine you only need a tune up every 100,000 miles when using the original equipment type iridium spark plugs. HTH. -Jim
