what goes out when you tow the vehicle without shifting transfer case into neutral

That is a good question, it is usually the upper drive assembly, but if anything happens to a transfer case it is best to overhaul it, don't mess around with just replacing a part here and there, you'll spend more bucks in piece work then if you just did it all at once.
