My 4WD has become very unreliable i.e. it doesn't want to engage when it should, it will disengage when you turn off the car and turn it back on, and sometimes it will engage on its own.

When was it last in for maintenance?

just like a regular maintenance tune up? about a year and a half, i believe.

It could be the 4wheel drive acuator or the push button switch on the dash
