Why is the ignition warning chime ringing so quietly ?

Today I noticed that there is something wrong with the ignition warning chime on my '90 LTD Crown Victoria. When turning the ignition key to ON, the chime starts ringing for a few seconds. BUT it is now a very quiet and barely audible ringtone. Normally the chime is quite loud and cannot be missed. Battery should be OK - anything else works properly and the engine starts immediately.

Solution found at http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=307170. After replacing the rotted foam surrounding the piezo transducer the chime module works properly again.
