1991 f250 runs fine for a while then acts like its running out of fuel?

Asked by Sumorabbit32 Mar 19, 2017 at 02:50 PM about the 1991 Ford F-250 2 Dr XLT Lariat Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1991 f250 with a 460 - I drove it about 200 miles the other day
running just fine. On the return trip home the truck started to act like it was
running out of fuel, so i filled it up i drove about 2 miles and it started acting
the same. I had it towed into a small town close by - I changed the fuel
filter, fuel pressure regulator and the map sensor but it still acts the same-
not sure what the problem is - it's funny because when it starts acting like
its running out of fuel i'll shut it off and restart it and it will run just fine for
about 2 miles and acts up again - Any ideas? please help

Should have the fuel pressure checked. The fuel pump may be getting weak.

Ok was thinking about that - was also thinking maybe its the TPS wasn't for sure tho if the TPS would make the truck act like that also

At this point, I don't think it is a TPS. It just doesn't act like it. I would start by checking the fuel pressure, with the fuel pressure gauge hooked up, rev the engine up to see if it holds the proper fuel pressure, It should not drop much if any.

Im a 460 man if you havent replaced or done away with you cat your truck will act like a dying fuel pump, bad map censor, your cat is most likely pluged, especially if u have had head gasket blown in the trucks history coolant will ruin a cat along with mostly minor to severe engine damage if you do not catch is quik, and if your not sure about the cat drill two half inch holes in your down pipes before the cats , if for some reason that doesn’t fix your problem you buy a cheap band clamp stainless from your auto store , or another common problem that I run into is if you’re manifold gaskets leak or your studs are loose will apply to much heat to your spark plug wires and causing it to misfire or run roughly but your plug wires would have to be severely burnt to cause that easy to tell check all your plug wires

i wanna try this. but a little nervous. Can i run the vehicle like this forever if this fixes the problem? can i use Quicksteel to plug the holes if this doesnt fix the problem? im at my wits end with this truck.. I've really tried to keep this truck running but it just acts up so infrequently. its unreliable.
