Asked by Aug 12, 2013 at 09:48 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Base

Question type: General

When you turn the key to start the car nothing happens, the lights and radio work all dash board lights come on and I even tried to jump the car but still nothing happens.  The Theif System warning light comes on.

everything is connected to your battery and the anti theft device is too chances are it runs on some sort of external power so car jackers dont unplug the battery and disable the alarm and get in

You have a "transponder" key that uses a radio type signal to be recognized by the car's security system. If you're trying to use a new key because of a lock cylinder replacement or you lost the old one the security system won't recognize it and so it won't allow you to start the car. There is no battery in the key though. You must have any new key(s) programmed into the system in order to start the car with them. HTH. -Jim
