98 F150 won't engage in a gear

Asked by Jun 20, 2017 at 10:06 PM about the 1998 Ford F-150 XLT 4WD Extended Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Shifter moves freely through all gears,  hear a little whine
when in a gear but only engages occasionally and only for
a short period of time.  Started when I buried it in the
mud.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Buried in MUD, well what did you think would happen haha, ANUF SAID.

*enough. Sorry was using the truck for what thy are made for, hauling, truck got off into soft ground and dug in. Just trying to get some help on fixing it. Not looking for a troll to make stupid comments, thanks anyway.

Fair enough, Have you opened up the pan and case to see how much sludge got into it. I would start with that, clean everything as best you can. Start with new filters and fluids. Pull the rear diff cover as well. A buddy of mine does mud bogs, However, first time out he didn't have everything sealed up the way he should have and the trans/case/trans cooler/rear diff was full of mud/water after they pulled him out after his first run.

How does sludge get into a transmission, transfer case and differential. Water maybe but mud? My guess is a transfer case issue.

I believe you burned up a already new death clutch.

Automatic, mud was dry not like soupy. Appreciate the help.

The 4R70/AODE trans is known for having a very weak Direct drum and bearing assembly. The back and forth rocking could easily have broken the bearing. Causing the direct drum to move around between the ring gear and planet assembly. This will starve the Direct clutches and cause the trans to whine and not have any gears.
