2002 - Camaro- dashboard fuel gage runs up and down

Asked by Jun 26, 2013 at 11:05 AM about the 2002 Chevrolet Camaro Base Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My fuel gage will run up to full and stay there for a period of time before returning to the accurate location.  I can be running on a quarter tank and the gage will run to full and stop for a while and then to half for a while and then back to the proper location.  Is this an electrical issue.

Sounds more like the sender is getting ready to fail, on most GM vehicles when the fuel gauge senses an open circuit the gauge will go full scale until ohms come back to something the gauge can read. That may explain the varied readings. Check the sender connector first as they have been known to fail. If you do decide to replace it might as well replace it as a fuel pump assembly as it is an 02 the fuel pump could fail at any time.
