Theft Light Stays on When I Lock Doors

Asked by AKchris Nov 25, 2013 at 07:29 AM about the 1997 Ford F-150 XLT Extended Cab SB

Question type: General

Any time I lock my doors via the
buttons on the door or with the key
fob on my truck, the theft light comes
on and starts on. It only shuts off if I
hit the unlock button or start the
truck. The only way it doesn't come
on is if I manually press down the
door locks. Any ideas?

The problem is a stuck switch inside the door, attached to the lock. Decades ago the switch was a button on the inside of the kick panel. A button that could be pressed with your toe if you wanted to cut off the light while the door was open. Having a "better idea" they moved it to inside the door where it is harder to get to and replace. Try this first. Remove the door panel and visually locate the switch. Disconnect the battery. Flood the switch (via spray) with electrical contact cleaner, move the switch up and down. Then use something like WD 40 and do the same thing. . You may work it loose. It's worked for me several times. Try what is simple first.
