95 f150 with 4.9 6 cyl always ran cold, temp gauge barely moves
I recently flushed system new coolant, new thermostat@192 degree.
Now it runs at operating temp, gauge sits between no of normal on
gauge. Problem is it now "pings" when underload like going up steep
grade with ac on! Gauge stays normal no overhesting, just pinging!!!!
Try a new EGR valve. Heard that will cause the ping sound.
Check your ignition timing and adjust to specs. If you haven't done a tune up in awhile that'd be a good idea (plugs, wires, cap, and rotor). Check the knock sensor. Be sure that when it starts pinging the knock sensor is retarding the ignition timing. Sounds like it's not. HTH. -Jim
Thanks! I checked timing its ok. Did a complete tuneup. How would I check knock sensor? That is if i can find it!
You're welcome. Glad to help. I just checked rockauto and Autozone's website. I don't see a knock sensor listed. So, you can do one of two things. You can buy a higher octane gasoline, such as 89 octane instead of 87 octane. Or you can retard the ignition timing a couple of degrees (no more than 4°). Either of these options should stop the pinging. It is possible that there's carbon deposits in the combustion chambers. A good "clean out" run out on the expressway may cure it as well. HTH. -Jim
