truck shutting of while driving
95 F150 xlt V8 5.8L Drove fine for 4 to 5 hrs suddenly shut off while driving
started back up after a few try, ran for bout 5 mins shut off again. I let it sit
5 to 10 mins started up ran fine for bout half hour again shut off while
driving, again let it sit a min started back up after turning a few times then
shut off after about a min, had to let it sit another 10mins before it cranked
back up drove another 10miles home left it idling for bout 30 mins nothing
did not shut off, could this be cuased by fuel filter? Not getting hot oil just
changed battery is bit old but seems to run fine
I kind of remember there being a problem with the ignition control module getting hot and shutting down vehicle then starting back up when it cooled down.
yea went by auto shop up street today they said that what it sounds like but only way to test is when its messing up since only happens if i run truck long time be hard to do though they did say it will gradually slowly get worse
Had a hopped up Grand Torino back in the 70's which did the exact same thing. Ford mechanic relative told me to carry a gallon jug of water in the trunk. When it did it again, pour the water over the ignition control box to cool it off. If it immediately restarted, replace the module.
Before u replace the module, check for spark when it doesn't want to start, if no spark, replace it
It did it several times today but it seems to be only doing it when i drive at slower speeds 10-30mph or while idling when on interstate seems to run fine would that still be IC module?
I would do the couple of suggestions that was recommended on your post as soon as it starts doing it check for spark or carry a gallon of water with you and pour on ignition module and see if vehicle starts back up. If you do have spark or vehicle does not start after pouring water on module post back and we will go from there because without doing those tests we would just be guessing like you are doing.
Replaced ICM ran for another 10 mins and shutdown again seemed to stutter a bit before shutting down let sit 10-15 mins ran again for another 15-20mins started to stutter like gas issue made it to right before drive way before it cut out was able to coax in, again i drive 30miles plus to worl in early morn with no issue
Ur still shooting in the dark. Check for spark when it cuts off to narrow down the problem
Final conclusion Distributor bushing was so shot you could move center rod to left and right
I hate to bring new life back into an old post lol but after you replaced the distrib. bushing, did it die on you anymore? My 86 is having the same problems and wanna check it.
