kicks in and out of overdrive,you have
to mash the pedal and hold it before it
responds, it's got. a backfire
throughout the breather,, could it be
plugs and wires

Yes. It could also be a fuel related problem ie low pressure, partially plugged injectors, vacuum leaks etc. Do a compression check, test for excess slop in the timing chain, and if that checks good then do a good tune up, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, PCV valve and all the filters, double check the base timing, make sure the throttle body and ISC are clean. You might also check the transmission kick down cable for proper adjustment and the fluids color and level, service if needed. HTH
