1994 Ford F150 4x4 4.9l I6 overheating, Have replaced thermostate (twice) and flushed radiator. Has thermostat design changed and or do they have multiple heat settings

without thermostat engine dosen't overheat, actually struggles to get to op

You're lucky it gets up to operating temp without a thermostat. Have you checked to see if the radiator is blocked?
