Why would power steering on 2001 MB 320SLK stop working?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

In parking lot. Car idling. AC on. Heard a thump/thunk noise. Battery light came on. AC stopped putting out cool air. Tried to move car to shaded spot. Power steering gone. Struggled with steering wheel. Car was drivable but with difficulty. Welcome any thoughts as to problem.
