What is the possibility of the upper control arm breaking while getting your front brakes and rotors done?

Asked by Jul 15, 2014 at 03:53 PM about the 2003 Mercedes-Benz S-Class S 500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Passenger front upper control arm broke when they put it up on the rack to do the front brakes and rotors.  They said it was worn and that is why it broke.

That sounds about right, chances are that it was fractured before they started and when the stress changed when they started to raise the vehicle it snapped. I've seen this on other rigs, it is usually caused by a impact from a curb or a parking bumper, even hitting a deep pothole.

thats BS shoes, they are made to withstand road force, and what extra force would be exerted by lifting the car at the lift points? And if it was fractured, it would have failed from the road force, and steering would have gone right out the window.......Probably the kid at the local brake shop

Sorry Doc but have you stressed a newer upper control arm lately, it is surprising how much little force will break it.
