Having a recurring oil leak (maybe have to replace pump?) but not sure what type of oil is best to use to top off?

Asked by shay2016 Mar 10, 2016 at 12:07 PM about the 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300-Class 4 Dr 300E Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our mechanic suggests shell rotella (diesel) formula.  even though engine is not diesel.  says for 1992, this was recommended.  also he recommends to avoid synthetic oil.
i'm confused.

If you already have a leak - it will leak even faster with Synthetic because it is a thinner oil. His suggestion might be a temporary lessening of the problem - but it will definitely not fix it. Only a new seal and/or pump will resolve your issue.
