What happens there is a hose on the fill tube, this tube or hose takes vapor gas from the tank and put it through charcoal canister. If this gets clogged or you over fill the car with gas it will go down the tube.....

I had a fuel smell in my 300CE. A mechanic spent a good hour going all over the car, finally disassembled the boot/trunk lining and found a perished rubber ring seal between the fill pipe and the tank. Replaced the seal, problem solved.
