2004 Chevy Malibu won't start

Asked by May 21, 2016 at 06:24 PM about the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This morning on my way to work, my  serpentine
belt broke. My fiancé fixed it. After I got home and
went to go drive it, it was puttering while at a stand
still and making a very loud rattling sound from the
engine. We just changed the spark plugs. After we
changed then, we let the car sit for a couple of
minutes and it made the rattling sound WORSE. We
shut it off and then tried to turn it back on and it
won't start. My battery is good, new park plugs,
what could be the problem?

Did any of the serpentine belt get into where the timing belt is located? What is the reason the serpentine belt broke. They usually don't just fail, but some bad part breaks them. I am wondering if the timing belt broke or slipped causing the valves to contact the pistons. This is not good when that happens. Also the harmonic balancer may be bad causing both belts (timing and serpentine) to be damaged. Have a trusted mechanic look at it.
