A multi meter will be required to check your car. When the engine is running, the voltage at the battery should be above 13 volts. Normal voltage is 13.4 -13.6 volts with the engine running above idle. This would indicate the alternator is working. How old is the battery? If it is more than 3 years old, it may be bad. Take it to a parts store like Auto Zone and they can test the battery. If the voltage drops under 10.5 under load, it is probably a bad battery.

Sounds like a bad battery, or a short somewhere in the system. I agree that you should first have your battery tested, as that is the easiest and cheapest place to start.
