The cooling down of the exhaust pipes and or the catalytic converters. If you can after stopping it when the sounds start, stick you head underneath and pinpoint the site of the popping. You cats may be not working correct or getting too hot and crackling as they cool down. If your running too rich of fuel, it may heat up the catalytic converters so you may have that part checked. Possible code reads or something along those lines.
