what caues a 05 chevy malibu to jerk?

My car has been jerking off and on for the past month, so today I attempted to start the
car and it turned over however it didnt cut on.

Without actually checking the car myself some possibilitys. Tune up.fuel filter needs changing.fuel pump bad if u run your tank on empty a lot.
