Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a SS Impala 3.8 and I was driving it
and all of a sudden it died. When I tried
starting it it would start but wouldn't stay
running. So I bought a acron pocket
scanner and two codes came up PO103
and PO442 the first one is mass airflow
sensor high input and the second one is
EVAP canister.  My husband tried cleaning
the mass airflow with a cleaner but it
didn't help. But he said if he was me he
wouldn't spend the 350 to buy those parts
until he knew for sure that was the
problem. But if it's throwing those codes
what else could it be.

P0103 CHEVROLET - Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input...Possible causes: Faulty mass air flow sensor, Intake air leaks, Dirty mass air flow sensor, Dirty mass air filter, Mass air flow sensor harness is open or shorted, Mass air flow sensor circuit poor electrical connection...Possible symptoms: Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light), Engine stall, Engine running rough, Excessive fuel consumption, Excessive smoke... Before replacing the mass air flow sensor, try replacing the air filter and cleaning the air flow sensor with low compress air or mass air flow sensor cleaner. Reset code and drive vehicle. If the code comes back, it may be necessary to replaced the mass air flow sensor.

I'm with your Husband. I hate throwing parts and money at a problem! Most likely cause of the P0103 code is faulty wiring going to the mass airflow sensor. So carefully inspect that wiring and the mass airflow sensor plug. The P0442 code is a small leak detected in the EVAP system. This could be the gas cap, or any area of the EVAP system. Try removing and reinstalling the gas cap. Clear the computer (PCM) and see if the code comes back. If it does you'll need to have a smoke test done on the EVAP system. A small leak may not be able to be seen with the naked eye. But the smoke test will show you where it's leaking. Concentrate on the P0103 code first. The P0442 code will not make the engine not run. But the P0103 code can make the engine not run. HTH. -Jim
