My VSC and Check Engine lights are on and I am hearing a resonating noise coming from under my Highlander [exhaust system?]. The code is p0136 - oxy sensor - are these issues related?

I have a 2002 Highlander w/ 112K miles on it. Don't want to put huge $$$ into it, but
noticed the VSC and Engine Lights come on and stay on. Correspondingly, I have also
recently noticed a resonating sound coming from the under carriage of my Highlander.  
It sounds like an exhaust system leak. So, per recommendation of the Gurus, I had
the codes scanned and it came up "p0136 - (Bank 1) Rear oxygen sensor
malfunction". Could these two issues be related?  Is this an expensive repair?

I'm sure it is related, an O2 code doesn't always mean to replace them, it means the sensor is detecting less than ideal conditions. From your description of some noise under the SUV, I suspect you have an exhaust leak causing the O2 sensor to trip a code. Have the car looked at your local muffler shop, they should find the issue in short order.

Tom - Thanks very much for taking the time to respond!

This is an issue with Toyota, ESP. after maintenance is done. I replaced spark plugs in my 04 highlander limited v6, two mins after startup, check engine + VSC lights came on. same thing with my moms 00 Avalon. Usually an 02 sensor. Toyota should be addressing this issue, but they don't!
