Question type: Maintenance & Repair

while driving,  the car pops out of 4th gear.....if I try to hold it in to 4th gear,  it begins to make a grinding sound....no problem going from 3rd to 5th gear, and it doesn't pop out of any other gear....how serious is this?

At the very least the scyncro for 4th is bad, could also be a worn out gear but you won't know that until you open up the trans. You could try draining the trans and look at the fluid to see if there is any metal particles in it,then refill with new lube, but you are still going to have to pull the trans to get it fixed properly. I would just do the 3 to 5 shift temporarily until you can get it fixed.
