Cobalt 5 speed red-line early

Asked by budmaster211 Dec 18, 2015 at 12:56 AM about the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I have a '05 Cobalt 5 speed that I had a motor
put into and ever sense, the motor will red-line/Rev
out early! And it gets earlier the higher the gear. 1st
isn't much but 2nd is like 500-750rpm early and 3rd
is about to 1k!!!!  The shop said they tried a couple
things like re-learn the crank sensor or something
(Idk, I'm no mechanic!) but to no avail. And thwy
said they don't know and it being a used motor....
blah blah blah!!
Any ideas?

Are you saying the engine runs out of power early in the RPM range? Is the engine tired? Low compression?

Wait. You must mean 5000 to 7000, not 500. And 10,000 will blow that engine. Can you please clarify?

Ford - I think bud means the engine runs out of power 500 to 750 rpm before redline in 2nd gear.

And 500 rpm will not produce enough oil pressure to keep engine from seizing

If my guess is on target it could be a dirty air filter and/or a partially plugged up catalytic converter or just a tired engine.

Hey, guys. Sorry, was working. So yes, full_of_regrets got it. It just redlines early and I feel that drop in power and everything. I have a brand new air filter, cat, & muffler so I know it's breathing well. It was a used motor so probably just tired huh? But it gets to 5k rpm no problem. So it does Rev up normally, not sluggish or anything. And I've had the Modis hooked up to it and no signs of anything wrong. It's just weird because it redlines earlier and earlier every gear. And yes, I do try to Rev the piss out of it! It hits the rev-limiter/govner everytime!
