Toyota Camry 2002, engine in running but the tires won't move when gas is pushed?

Asked by Oct 04, 2014 at 10:02 AM about the 2002 Toyota Camry XLE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Yesterday as I was accelerating to
merge, the car lurched and started
slowing down so I pulled over and
checked to see if I popped a tire or
something. When I restarted the car I
switched into drive but when I
pushed on the gas the engine would
roar but the tires would not move at
all. I tried it a few times but it still
didnt work and it had to be towed.
Also, there's a screeching sound
when I switch from drive to park. Can
anyone tell me what the problem is
or what I should check?

When was the last time your transmission was serviced? The way you're describing the problem you may have transmission problems. worst case, the internal clutches are shot or it could be a valve body issue. Or you simply could have a faulty transmission line. Was there any fluid under the car?

Check your transmission fluid level. The engine must be running, pull out the dipstick, wipe it off, reinsert it then pull it out. You should see the fluid level on the hash marks.
