2001 toyota camry 4cyl just changed radiator and thermostate. upper hose is hot lower hose cold/ warm. heat coming out of heater and temp t gage is half way. Is this the way its suppose to be
The engine should reach it's optimal temperature and stay there, the heater core should be putting out heat, and none of the hoses should appear collapsed or leaking, and coolant levels should be withing the range marked on the degas/overflow bottle. If not, then you have a problem.
Did you purge the cooling system from the air pockets when refilling?

is then bottom hose suppose to be warm not hot like the top hose? Could the thermostate be half open
If purging the cooling system does not help, I would recommend replacing the water pump. The impeller deteriorates threw time and then you do not have the proper circulation in the cooling system. To purge out the cooling system it is best to have the front end up on an incline or jacked up. Air bubbles rise. Take the radiator cap off and start the vehicle. Set the heater control setting to hot, with the fan off. Run the vehicle to operating temperature to where the thermostat would open. During this time coolant may spill out of the top of the radiator which is fine. Just the air working its way out. They make a funnel to attach to the radiator so as to not loose the coolant from spilling on the ground, but if you don't have one, oh well. Just have a gallon of extra coolant on hand so when the thermostat open the coolant level will drop in the radiator. Add coolant at this time to the radiator. Let the thermostat cycle a few times, it will open and close due to the cool coolant. Put the radiator cap back on while the engine is running, then you can turn it off. DO NOT be revving the engine and letting go of the throttle! You will get a shower of coolant. You can rev. the engine but slowly releasing the throttle.
think the water pump is the problem. purged the system and hoses are the same. top is hot, bottom is cold/ warm. Would this cause a po401 code. Egr valve shouts the engine off when I sucked on it vacuum line and replaced vsv . no vacuum to egr valve.
When changing the water pump, your gonna want to change the timing belt and pulleys. The timing belt runs the water pump. This is info on the po401....P0401 TOYOTA - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected...Possible causes; EGR passage clogged, Faulty EGR Vacuum Modulator Valve, Faulty EGR Valve, Faulty EGR solenoid valve, EGR solenoid valve harness is open or shorted, EGR solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection, Dead (Weak) battery, Faulty EGR temperature sensor and circuit, Exhaust gas leaks...EGR flow malfunction could be caused by a clogged EGR valve or EGR tube. Before replacing any parts try cleaning the EGR valve, tube and passages.
I changed the vsv valve, Had a po401 code, egr valve good, sucked on it and car stop running. question is: I cleared the check engine light . Di I have to run 50 to 100 miles to reset the computer. AS of right now no vacuum going to egr valve
Yes it needs to be run so it can go threw a cycle.
