96 Camry LE reverse no longer works

Asked by DavesCamry Jun 09, 2017 at 09:24 PM about the 1996 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My REVERSE no longer works.  It will rev as if it is
in park and it will not budge. Also, the car will
actually drive if it's shifted in NEUTRAL. It drives
just fine at all speeds when in DRIVE. Is it just a
matter of time before the transmission kicks the
can? Is it salvageable? Is it worth saving?

What Engine...mileage? Check the quality and quantity of Trans fluid. Refer to your owners manual for procedure. If fluid level is OK...and....the odor of the fluid smells burnt.....you most likely have a trans failure. A good Trans Shop can conduct a series of pressure tests to verify this diagnosis.

Consider the suggestions noted above. The fact that this vehicle wants to move when in neutral suggests a shift leaver issue. When the vehicle is in reverse and fails to move...does the engine rev up? Like its in neutral?

Yes. Im pretty sure it just revs up and will not go into to reverse like its in neutral

Trans overhaul or replace costs are likely to be more than the value of this vehicle. Always do the easiest and cheapest repair first. Have some check the trans fluid for quantity...quality...and odor. What color is the TF? Does it smell burnt? See if there is action down at the trans when some one else shifts trans through all the gears. Get back with results.
