1995 Toyota Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Timing is off the scale at I’m guessing around 40
degrees BTDC. What sensor would cause this if it
has failed? Symptoms include hesitation and
excessive fuel consumption.

do a compression test , or better yet a leak down , if the belt has slipped turning the motor may cause damage if it is an interference motor

With what instrument are you checking the timing ? Is the engine running when you make this check? Pull the engine dip stick. Smell the oil. Does the oil smell like GAS.?

I pulled the timing cover and distributor to make sure it hasn’t jumped time. I check the timing with a timing light, idle rpm at around 750, diagnostics terminals TE1 and E1 jumped. The oil does not smell like fuel.

so with the timing light it was 40 degrees advanced ? it wouldn't even run like that , is injector(s) firing normal ?

It does run, barely. I even borrowed a friends timing light, thinking mine was bad, his showed the same. Haven’t checked the injectors, that wouldn’t mess with the timing like that. That’s why I was thinking a sensor gone bad? Would a faulty knock sensor cause this? Or a bad CPS? The CIL has never come on, I believe it’s been disabled. When I try to pull diagnostic codes the OD OFF light will flash 63, which is a shift solenoid, don’t believe that’s my problem either, I’m really stumped

With the key ON and Engine OFF......T1 and E1 connected...you should be able to read trouble codes. The CEL should flash trouble codes....or.....flash at a steady rate. If this does not happen....you have a bad ECU or a wiring issue. Whats the history on this vehicle. any reason repairs or issues?
