Camry 1994 - V6 Automatic - ODB II Code P1780 - Dangerously shifts from "D" to "1" while driving

Asked by Jun 17, 2013 at 12:59 PM about the 1994 Toyota Camry LE V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Toyota Camry 1994 V6 Automatic dangerously shifts from "D" Drive to "1" 1st gear while driving , causing the RPM to jump insanely. I've heard different ideas ranging from bad Park/Neutral Gear to bad ECU (Engine Control Unit) to bad ECT (electronic control transmission )  Anyone have any experience in this matter? I'm planning to fix it, but would like to be informed before going into the dealer.  Thanks

Don't take it to the dealer. If you want someone to look it over, take it to a reputable local auto shop that you can get some referrals. You will get parts replaced at the dealer you don't need replacing. The Camry's have a common problem when this code come up and if you find the wires, you can resolder them and fix your issue. Check for a break in the wires in the wiring harness on the left trunk lid hinge, peal apart the harness and inspect it closely, repair any damaged wires there. Usually the break in the wires is about three inches before the wire bundle coming down in the left hinge joined a larger wire bundle in the rear quarter panel. Hope this helps.
