Why do you need the car to be in gear to get a jump? It's designed NOT to be in gear in this case otherwise when you jump it, it will lurch forward. If the battery is dead, and you need to move the car in order to get access to hood, then look in your owner's manual for "Shift Lock Release" - it will involve removing shifter console cover and releasing the shift lock (usually a yellow lever). This will let the car roll back or forward by shifting into neutral BUT it also removes the safety feature of preventing a car from starting in gear so bear that in mind. It would actually be easier to just run longer jumper cables than to go to the trouble of removing the shift lock.
