Towing with a Subaru legacy sus

Asked by Zolliuos Sep 12, 2019 at 04:13 AM about the 1999 Subaru Legacy 30th Anniversary Sedan AWD

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 1999 Subaru legacy 30 anniversary 2.5 automatic
I would like to be able to pull 3000 lb camper.
My question what needs upgraded, other then the engine(
already in plans to upgrade) to increase the towing
capacity.
Please list everything.

If you decide to chance it anyway you will need trailer brakes and a brake controller. A hitch, heavy duty transmission cooling and heavier shocks/springs in the rear. A bigger engine radiator would be a good idea. Tires with a heavier load rating would also be advisable.

the trailer comes with electronic built in brakes that i was looking at. I didnt think of the tires so thats something i need to make a note on. the tranny cooling was also recommended to me. but i had thoughts on should i like at a slightly bigger transmission as well for the increased horsepower from the engine upgrades and wanting to tow a trailer.

You cannot upgrade the transmission and trying to get more power from the engine is a waste of money. BTW. You still need a trailer brake controller unless you have surge brakes (not nice).

I forget: DOHC or SOHC? Given the serious fragility of the 1996-1999 DOHC 2.5i I wouldn't even "tow" passengers in the back seat...never mind a caboose!
