The 'Power" light flashes throughout. What could be the problem?

I just purchased a used Subaru Forester 1999 2L model car with79000 miles on it. The problem is that car jerks violently when forward and reverse gears are engaged.

I'm guessing it could be many things. Could be spark related / plugs / wires / coil / etc. Could be sensor related / fuel filter / or it could be something else. You might try asking on www.subaruforester.org as there are a ton of helpful folks there. I hope you find your answer quickly.
