Sounds like either a bad starter or broken teeth on the flywheel. HTH. -Jim

We replaced the starter. Now it does the same thing but we just ran the car this morning.

Did you inspect the flywheel ring gear for broken/damaged teeth? HTH. -Jim

Ok, sounds good. While you're doing that, also check the starter drive to flywheel ring gear clearance. It should be .020". If it's not, you'll have to put shims in between the starter motor and the block. A whole shim moves it away and a half shim moves it closer. If all that checks out, be sure you have the correct starter. Rebuilt units sometimes get lumped together under one part number. On older model Grand Prixs the 3.8 and 3.1 starters often get misboxed. The two units look almost identical except the 3.8 unit is a little longer and a little fatter. Same may be true for your application. But I doubt that the old and new starters would be doing the exact same thing unless there's something else going on. Like a flywheel issue or clearance issue. Just wanted to throw that out so you'd be aware. HTH. -Jim
