2000 Grand Prix Stalling/Dying While Driving

Asked by Jan 07, 2017 at 03:18 PM about the 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 Grand Prix with 220,000 miles on it that, when I bought,
worked just fine. Latley, I have been driving the car short distances and
noticed about 2-4 weeks ago (maybe more) that when letting off the gas or
coming to a stop, it started to loose power. I started to warm the car up for
the last 2 weeks, thinking it was the cold weather doing it and it worked just
fine until yesterday. As I was driving to work, with ice on the roads, I let off
the gas and started to coast down a hill and noticed that it tried to stall/die
again but, without pressing the accelerator, it came back to life on its own.
Two seconds later, the car shut off. The windsheild wipers still worked, my
heat still worked (just "dimmed"), and I lost power steering. I tested the
battery and altenator, both come back fine. Ran a diagnostics test, no
code. What could be the problem?

Sounds like a dirty or bad IAC (idle Air Control) valve. Try cleaning it and the throttle plate with an aerosol can of carburetor cleaner. If that doesn't work replace the IAC. HTH. -Jim
